Public Information Workshop Scheduled to Solicit Input on US 17 Corridor Area Plan
Port Charlotte, FL (June 15, 2009) — The Charlotte County growth management department will conduct two public information workshops to seek input on the Draft U.S. 17 Area Plan starting at 6:30 pm. on Tuesday, June 23 and 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 27 in the cafeteria at the Edison State College campus in Punta Gorda, located at 26300 Airport Road.
The Draft US 17 Area Plan, which is posted on the County’s web site at http://www.charlottecountyfl.com/GrowthManagement/PlanningZoning, includes the recommendations and proposed policies resulting from the US 17 Corridor Study, which has been looking at how to best guide future development along an eight-mile segment of US Highway 17 from the DeSoto County line to the City of Punta Gorda. The study process included dialogue with community residents and other stakeholders to identify opportunities that allow for development, redevelopment and enhancement of existing commercial and residential areas, as well as preserving environmentally sensitive lands. The Draft Area Plan proposes polices for establishing future improvements for transportation, utilities, storm-water management, public access to waterways, and land preservation. The finalized policies will be incorporated into the Smart Charlotte 2050 plan which is the overall growth guide for all of Charlotte County.
The public workshop will solicit input on the recommendations and policies of the draft plan prior to finalization. The County is encouraging residents, business owners and any other persons with an interest in this area to attend a workshop and provide their comments and opinion.
