oldcorkscrew1021-785187head

ESTERO, FL (May 6, 2009) – Old Corkscrew has been listed as the only Fort Myers golf course in the recent release of America’s Top Golf Courses Guide Book. The publication, now in its 6th edition, is produced and distributed by Zagat Publications, based on a consumer survey of avid golfers. In addition, Old Corkscrew is among the “Noteworthy Newcomers” special listing in the guide.

The annual publication includes comparative ratings and reviews of golf courses, facilities, service and value, and price per round. Old Corkscrew, which opened in February 2007, received ratings higher than more mature courses across the nation. Reviews in the guide cited Old Corkscrew as “Probably the best course in the Fort Myers region…definitely worth the drive.”

This is Old Corkscrew’s first appearance in the guide, and according to Mark Iwinski, manager of golf operations for Old Corkscrew Golf Club, “This listing, with the high ratings and reviews, reinforces the quality reputation of the course and club. It’s rewarding for members and staff to see Old Corkscrew listed and rated among the top facilities in the nation.”

America’s Top Golf Courses includes ratings and reviews of public, semi-private and resort courses, as well as driving ranges and leading private courses in the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. It’s based entirely on the experiences of 6,054 golfers who average more than 8 rounds of golf per month. Like similar consumer-based guides produced by Zagat, like dining, entertainment and hotels, the publication is intended to help golfers select courses and facilities to meet their individual needs. The guide is available in major bookstores as well as online.

Old Corkscrew is an 18-hole golf facility located on Corkscrew Road between Fort Myers and Naples, Florida on a 275-acre magnificently wooded site of native oak hammocks, towering slash pines, sabal palms and palmettos that, along with the natural flow way that cuts through the center of the property, creates beautiful vistas of lakes and preserves which enhance the golfing experience. The par-72 championship golf course is a free-standing recreational facility with no residential development on the site. It is a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course which is the highest standard of design offered by Nicklaus Design and includes Jack Nicklaus’ personal oversight and involvement in every step of the design and construction. Franz-and-Stewart-707161

ESTERO, FL (January 5, 2009) –PGA tour player Stewart Cink, ranked #16 worldwide and number 10 on the money list, took in not just one, but two rounds of golf at Old Corkscrew Golf Club last week. In town with family for a youth hockey tournament being held at Germain Arena, Cink checked out Old Corkscrew between games. He played his first round with some of the hockey dads on Monday, December 29 and liked it so much he brought family back and played a second round on the 31st.

According to Mark Iwinski, general manager of Old Corkscrew, Cink was very complementary about the golf course and its condition. “It was a privilege to have Stewart Cink play Old Corkscrew, not once, but twice in the same week. He said he ranked the course on par with other championship courses that he has played,” Iwinski said. “He also remarked how much he liked our pure golf experience, which is unlike most Florida golf courses that have homes lining the fairways.”

Old Corkscrew is an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature design golf course located on Corkscrew Road between Fort Myers and Naples. The par-72 championship golf course is the only Signature Nicklaus Design non-residential course in Southwest Florida, which is the highest standard of design offered by Nicklaus Design and includes Jack Nicklaus’ personal oversight and involvement in every step of the design and construction. “As with all Nicklaus Design courses, it is distinctive, demanding and definitely unforgettable. I’m certain that is the reason Mr. Cink’s returned for a second round.” said Iwinski.

Old Corkscrew Golf Club: Accolades continue for Old Corkscrew

Monday, December 1st, 2008

oldcorkscrew2

ESTERO, FL (December 1, 2008) – It has been less than two years since its opening, but the accolades have poured in for one of Southwest Florida’s newest golf courses: Old Corkscrew. Since late February of 2007 when the legendary Jack Nicklaus played 18 holes in a course opening exhibition round, to today, the course has been recognized with a Florida course-of-the-year award, named to two prestigious golf magazines best-of lists, earned its Audubon certification and lured Southwest Florida’s best known golf instructor to relocate his golf academy to the site.

“It’s been a great run so far for Old Corkscrew, that’s for sure,” said Mark Iwinski, manager of golf operations for Old Corkscrew Golf Club. “We are gratified by the recognition and awards we’ve received, but more important is the satisfaction we get in providing to our members and guests the best golf experiences in Southwest Florida.” Old Corkscrew is an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature design golf course located on Corkscrew Road between Fort Myers and Naples, Florida on 275-acre magnificently wooded acres. Natural cart paths wind around contoured fairways, a restored flowway, and lush greens. The course is carved from the natural terrain of native oaks, towering slash pines and surrounding native vegetation.

The undulating greens rise 10 to 20 feet above the fairways, creating stunning and serene vistas of adjacent farmlands, though with sometimes challenging pin placements. The par-72 championship golf course is the only Signature Nicklaus Design non-residential course in Southwest Florida, which is the highest standard of design offered by Nicklaus Design and includes Jack Nicklaus’ personal oversight and involvement in every step of the design and construction. “As with all Nicklaus Design courses, it is distinctive, demanding and definitely unforgettable,” said Iwinski. Old Corkscrew offers all the extras desired in a golf experience, including each cart being equipped with an advanced GPS system to facilitate more accurate and strategic play and a tour-caliber practice and chipping green that is kept in tournament ready condition.

The first major award received by Old Corkscrew was announced in October 2007 by the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) which named Old Corkscrew its 2008 Florida Course of the Year. The award is presented annually to an NGCOA member facility that is setting new standards in golf course design and club management by demonstrating exceptional quality, excellence of ownership and management, outstanding contributions to the community, and significant contribution to the game. In December, Golf Digest magazine, the nation’s number one golf publication, placed Old Corkscrew Golf on its prestigious list of America’s Best New Courses. The list is selected by a panel of more than 800 golfers who rate their golf experience after playing the course.

In January, 2008, Mike Calbot, better known as Southwest Florida’s Golf Doctor, relocated his International Golf Studio and TRIAD Golf Schools to Old Corkscrew. Calbot has more than 38 years of teaching experience and has been giving golf lessons in Southwest Florida since 1978. He is widely known for his golf tips program which has been airing on WINK-TV for more than 25 years. The golf studio offers private and small group instruction with a focus on video lessons.

In September 2008, Golf Magazine, a leading national publication read by more than 6 million golf enthusiasts every month, included Old Corkscrew Golf Club on its list of Best Courses Near You. It is the magazine’s first ever ranking of the best courses you can play in every state. The list includes 30 courses in Florida, but only two courses from Southwest Florida made the list: Old Corkscrew and Tiburon. Also, in October, 2007 Old Corkscrew learned that it had received its Silver Signature Sanctuary designation from Audubon International. The Audubon International certification program works with landowners and developers to create golf courses that are planned, constructed, and managed with a significant focus on environmental quality and sustainability. Environmental experts with Audubon International partnered with Old Corkscrew from the earliest stages of the design and construction of the course and created a Natural Resource Management Plan (NRMP) that serves as a construction and operations manual for the property.

Old Corkscrew Golf Club anticipates that there are many good years to come. “It’s really hard to single out just one thing that makes Old Corkscrew so special,” said Iwinski. “Our members tell us Old Corkscrew is “pure golf” in every sense of the word. They enjoy a beautiful setting, exceptional Jack Nicklaus design, award-winning golf, and the opportunity to create lasting memories. ”

ESTERO, FL (September 17, 2008) – Golf Magazine, a leading national publication read by more than 6 million golf enthusiasts every month, has named Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero, Florida on its list of Best Courses Near You. It is the magazine’s first ever ranking of the best courses you can play in every state. The list includes 30 courses in Florida, but only two courses from Southwest Florida made the list: Old Corkscrew and Tiburon.

“This recognition from Golf Magazine is a terrific honor,” said Mark Iwinski, manager of golf operations for Old Corkscrew Golf Club. “Old Corkscrew is a spectacular Jack Nicklaus Signature design course with beautiful vistas of lakes and nature preserves. The rankings were guided by a panel of 100 golfers who include major-championship winners, Ryder Cup players, architects, leading amateurs, journalists and other golf enthusiasts. Ranking criteria included how a course tests the full range of skills, design rhythm, variety, setting and conditioning, among others. “Credit for this honor needs to be given to our extraordinary staff whose enthusiasm and commitment keeps the course in tournament condition everyday and provides an exceptional round of golf to our members and visitors,” said Iwinski.

Old Corkscrew Golf Club: Earns Audubon International Signature Sanctuary Status

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Old-Corkscrew-714892

ESTERO, FL (January 8, 2008) – Old Corkscrew Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course located in Estero, has earned Audubon International Silver Signature Sanctuary designation, the first course in Lee County to achieve the Silver level and the 24th Certified Silver Signature Sanctuary in the world. “Our goal at Old Corkscrew is to create an outstanding golf experience and we are demonstrating that not only by our Jack Nicklaus Signature design, but also through our meticulous attention to environmental sensitivity,” said Mark Iwinski, manager of golf operations for Old Corkscrew.

The Audubon International Signature program works with landowners and developers to create golf courses that are planned, constructed, and managed with a significant focus on environmental quality and sustainability. Environmental experts with Audubon International partnered with Old Corkscrew from the earliest stages of the design and construction of the course and created a Natural Resource Management Plan (NRMP) that serves as a construction and operations manual for the property.

“This comprehensive document guides the development and long-term management of Audubon Signature projects,” said Nancy Richardson, program director for Audubon’s Signature Sanctuary program. The NRMP assesses natural resources and environmental impacts associated with the development and provides strategies for addressing natural resource issues. The environmental components of the plan are: Wildlife Habitat Enhancement and Management; Waste Management; Energy Efficiency; Water Quality and Conservation; and Integrated Pest Management. “I was amazed at how mature the course looks,” said Richardson. “At our final site visit I kept observing that the course, with its lush greens and mature vegetation, looked like it had been dropped fully developed, onto the land.”

Old Corkscrew is an 18-hole golf club located on Corkscrew Road between Fort Myers and Naples, Florida on a 275-acre magnificently wooded site. The par-72 championship golf course, which opened in February 2007, is a free-standing recreational facility; no residential development will ever occur on the site.

Site enhancements included the restoration of a historic flowway through the property, the preservation of 40 acres of wetland habitat and 15 acres of upland habitat. Wildlife corridors of cypress stands, palmetto, towering slash pine and native oak hammocks were protected within the site and connect to offsite areas. Exotic vegetation such as Melaleuca trees and Brazilian Pepper was removed and bird boxes, bat boxes, and feeding stations were installed to enhance habitat and attract wildlife.

Of special note was the successful transplant of the air plant, Tillandsia Pruinosa, a native species of bromeliad that had previously been found only in Collier County. “We transplanted about 330 of these tiny plants that root symbiotically on tree trunks and branches,” said Kevin Leo, construction superintendent for Old Corkscrew. “Initially we banded them to the tree to make sure they successfully rooted, but the transplantation has been incredibly successful and the plants are longer in need of the bands to remain in place.” Bromeliads are native plants that are environmentally helpful because they provide habitat for birds, small wildlife and they hold water.

“Overall, we planted more than 300,000 new, native plants such as muhly grass, spartina patens, lantana, firebush, dune sunflower, and coco plum throughout the property,” said Leo. “And while we were required to place 17 acres in conservation, we ended up conserving almost 40 acres.” “There are several levels of Audubon International programs that a golf course can participate in and each one takes a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, but the Silver level takes it two notches higher,” said Richardson. “We congratulate golf courses like Old Corkscrew for their dedication to the program and to adhering to Audubon International guidelines. Our goal is to assist these projects in lessening their impact not only on wildlife habitat but also on surface and groundwater quality.”

Certification in the Audubon International Signature Sanctuary program is an on-going process. To maintain certification golf facilities must submit periodic status reports plus participate in on-site audits by Audubon International. In addition, the certification has to be renewed each year.
“We are extremely proud of our Silver Signature Sanctuary designation,” said Iwinski. “The state of Florida has more golf courses than any other state and Old Corkscrew is one of the newest. The fact that we are the 11th Certified Silver Signature Sanctuary in Florida Is a demonstration of our commitment to environmental sustainability and we are looking forward to working with Audubon International to continue to preserve , enhance and protect the natural beauty of Southwest Florida .”

Old Corkscrew is a private membership club with flexible tee time access for member’s guests and visitors to the area who want to experience a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. Membership plans are considered the most accessible in Southwest Florida. “I think the raters that played the course and recommended us for the Best Courses list were struck by the exceptional sereneness of Old Corkscrew. This is due to the natural beauty of the land and the fact that there are no homes on the course,” said Iwinski.

The par-72 championship golf course is a free-standing recreational facility; no residential development will ever occur on the site.

It is a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course which is the highest standard of design offered by Nicklaus Design and includes Jack Nicklaus’ personal oversight and involvement in every step of the design and construction. The Club is the only Signature Nicklaus Design non-residential course in Southwest Florida. This is the 25th anniversary of the publication of Golf Digest’s America’s Best Courses” list and is included in the January issue of the magazine, which is now in circulation. Only two golf courses in Florida were included on Golf Digest’s “Best New Courses” list. The Conservatory course at Ginn Hammock Beach in Palm Coast was included at number three on the list.

This is the second major recognition that Old Corkscrew has received. In October it was named 2008 Florida Golf Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association. Old Corkscrew is a private membership club with flexible tee time access for member’s guests and visitors to the area who want to experience a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. Membership plans are considered the most flexible in Southwest Florida.
