AFCAAM charity golf tournament moves to Old Corkscrew

Fort Myers, FL (March 4, 2009) – AFCAAM announced today that their sixth annual Charity Classic golf tournament will be held Friday, April 17, 2008 at Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero.

The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. on the Jack Nicklaus Signature designed course. Following the scramble tournament, participants will enjoy dinner and an awards reception. Registration is $600 per foursome; the registration fee for an individual player is $150.

Prizes will be awarded for the first three places for both men’s and women’s teams. Other prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin and longest drive. Golf related, travel and other raffle prizes also are being solicited and other sponsorships opportunities are available for local businesses. Proceeds from the tournament benefit AFCAAM, a non-profit organization working in the African-American community of Fort Myers to promote self-reliance and human dignity through the communication of Christian values.

Old Corkscrew is located seven miles east of I-75 on Corkscrew Road in Estero. The Club opened for play in February of 2007 and has quickly been recognized as one of the nation’s finest golf courses. Old Corkscrew is the winner of the 2008 Florida Golf Course of the Year award by the National Golf Course Owners Association, has been recognized by Golf Digest magazine on its prestigious list of America’s Top 10 Best New Courses, listed as a Best Course Near You by Golf Magazine and it has been certified by Audubon International as a Signature Sanctuary golf course.

Fort Myers, FL (January 30, 2009) – The Inaugural AFCAAM Charitable Soiree, featuring The Screaming Orphans band, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 7 at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in the River District (downtown Fort Myers).
Originally from Ireland, The Screaming Orphans have carved a considerable following in Fort Myers after performing several shows at the former Dwyer’s restaurant (now Icabod’s).Their reputation for a captivating show featuring their own original music and covers of pop hits from the past 30 years draws fans of all ages. Their musical style is often compared to the Bangles and the Cranberries and they cite the Beatles, R.E.M., Indigo Girls, Abba, and traditional Irish music as musical influences.

The Orphans first came to international attention when Sinead O’Connor took them on as her back-up singers, and invited them to open for her 1997 world tour. They gained TV exposure appearing with Sinead on The David Letterman Show and the UK’s Top The Pops. They’ve also worked with a number of other well-known musical stars including Peter Gabriel and Joni Mitchell.

The AFCAAM Charitable Soiree will be emceed y Al Holland, formerly of The Platters, the 1950’s R&B musical group. Holland is a resident of Southwest Florida and an AFCAAM supporter.
