Complimentary Screenings for Prostate Cancer

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

(Fort Myers, Fla. – September 8, 2010) – Nearly 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the United States, making it the second most common form of cancer suffered by men. In fact, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. While prostate cancer is very common, it’s also very treatable if it is caught early. That’s why 21st Century Oncology along with participating Prostate Cancer Institute urologists in Lee and Collier Counties are offering complimentary prostate cancer screenings between September 13 and October 31 in honor of National Prostate Cancer Awareness month. Men are encouraged to “Know Your Number” which relates to the PSA screening.

Prostate Cancer Institute revised 3Prostate cancer can be detected early through a digital rectal exam paired with a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) screening. This is a simple blood test to measure the amount of antigen in the blood. Tested in nanograms of PSA per milliliter, a PSA level of under 4.0 ng/mL is considered “normal.” Prostate cancer found during one of these routine examinations is likely to be in an earlier stage and more treatable. All men age 50 or older and men age 40 or older with higher risk, such as those with a family history of prostate cancer at a young age, should be tested every year.

“Prostate cancer is very common, but with the advanced treatments available today, it can be treated effectively,” says Dr. Constantine Mantz, radiation oncologist for 21st Century Oncology and Medical Director of the Prostate Cancer Institute. “Urologists affiliated with the Institute are highly skilled in a number of surgical techniques for those patients who choose surgery.  For patients selecting radiation therapy, systems like Calypso® and TrueBeam™, which we’ve recently introduced in Southwest Florida, allow us to target cancer very precisely for radiation therapy and so treat patients safely and effectively.”

To make an appointment for a complimentary screening, men can contact any office listed on the Prostate Cancer Institute website – www.menscancercenter.com – or call 1-800-NEW-HELP. Patients will need a voucher to receive the screenings for free, which is available by calling 1-800-NEW-HELP or for download off of the website.

The complimentary screenings are made possible through 21st Century C.A.R.E., a foundation for cancer assistance, research and education.

Local radiation oncologist selected to present at national medical conference

Mantz to discuss research on Calypso® system’s effectiveness in guiding radiation treatment at American Society of Radiation Oncology’s 52nd Annual Meeting this fall

Constantine Mantz, M.D.

Constantine Mantz, M.D.

(Fort Myers, Fla. – July 13, 2010)

– Dr. Constantine Mantz, a radiation oncologist, has been selected to present his clinical research findings using the Calypso® 4D localization system in conjunction with stereotactic body radiation therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer at the American Society of Radiation Oncology’s 52nd Annual Meeting this fall in San Diego.  His abstract was one of 100 selected of the more than 3,000 submissions the conference receives each year and is based on his research conducted in Southwest Florida.  Mantz is also the Director of Research at 21st Century Oncology and Medical Director of the Prostate Cancer Institute.

This research follows a similar study he published in the medical journal Urology earlier this year, in which Mantz reported that the precision with which physicians can target radiation beams using the Calypso system enables them to treat prostate cancer with significantly less risk of unwanted side effects.  In this related study, radiation’s impact on urinary, bowel and sexual function was greatly reduced over conventional therapy.

“It’s an honor to be selected to present this research to my peers.  I’m particularly proud of the fact that we were able to conduct this nationally recognized work here in Southwest Florida and establish 21st Century Oncology as a leader in prostate cancer radiotherapy,” Mantz says.

The Calypso system tracks the movement of the prostate in real-time during a treatment session and allows for pinpoint accuracy in radiation delivery.  Prior to radiotherapy, tiny electromagnetic devices called beacon transponders are implanted in the patient’s prostate.  These transponders allow physicians to monitor the natural movement of the prostate during treatment and ensure that the prostate stays within the radiation beam.  Without Calypso, physicians may set radiation beams to cover a wider area, including healthy tissue, to account for these small movements.  The ability to continuously see where the prostate is located in relation to the radiation beam means clinicians can keep the beam’s scope narrow and direct higher, more effective radiation dose to the tumor.

Study Results to be presented on Prostate Cancer Treatment that Greatly Reduces Unwanted Side Effects

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Free Seminar Open to the Public

(Fort Myers, FL – April 5, 2010) – A new “tumor tracking” prostate cancer treatment that greatly reduces the side effects of radiation treatment is the subject of a free presentation available for the public. Dr. Constantine Mantz, a radiation oncologist at 21st Century Oncology, will present the results of a study he led to test the effectiveness of Calypso®, a system that uses real-time tracking to deliver pinpoint accuracy in radiation treatment. Seminars will be held on April 15 from 5 – 6 p.m. at the Wyvern Hotel in Punta Gorda, April 17 from 9 – 10 a.m. at the Cape Coral Hospital Auditorium, April 29 from 5 – 6 p.m. at Hyatt Place Coconut Point in Estero, and May 1 from 9 – 10 a.m. at the Regional Cancer Center in Fort Myers.

Dr. Constantine Mantz

Dr. Constantine Mantz

Mantz’s study demonstrated that the Calypso system significantly reduces radiation-related side effects in prostate cancer treatment. Participating patients treated with Calypso had significantly fewer problems with sexual function and fewer bowel and urinary problems compared to those treated using traditional means.

Mantz’s study results were published in the medical journal, Urology.

Prior to receiving radiation treatment with the Calypso system, tiny electromagnetic devices called beacon transponders are implanted in the patient’s prostate. These transponders allow physicians to monitor the natural movement of the prostate during treatment and ensure that the prostate stays within the radiation beam. Currently, physicians may set radiation beams to cover a wider area, including healthy tissue, to account for these small movements. The ability to continuously see where the prostate is located in relation to the radiation beam means clinicians can keep the beam’s scope narrow and direct higher, more effective radiation doses to the tumor.

“This is the first comparative study to show that margin reduction in prostate cancer radiation therapy has clinically significant and measurable benefits in decreasing acute toxicity and short-term side effects. By reducing acute toxicity, we hope these patients may also experience a significant reduction of long-term side effects,” said Mantz. “The Calypso system enables physicians to deliver increased doses of radiation directly to the tumor while sparing the surrounding healthy organs from exposure. It is fundamental to our overall approach of treating prostate cancer.”

Calypso uses three Beacon transponders the size of a grain of rice implanted around the cancerous tumor to help monitor the tumor’s location to direct treatment.

Seminar on Advanced Technology to Fight Prostate Cancer to be Held

Monday, March 8th, 2010

21c LOGO 2colr copy(Fort Myers, Fla. – March 8, 2010) – GPS isn’t just for driving directions anymore. Today’s radiation treatments for cancer patients can now pinpoint tumor locations and direct treatment to tumors with laser-like precision, just like your car or phone’s GPS can detect your exact location. Those wanting to learn more can attend 21st Century Oncology’s March 27 seminar from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Naples Beach Hotel. Presenters include Dr. Chaundre Cross, Dr. Michael Hanus, Dr. Bruce Nakfoor, Dr. David Ornstein, Dr. David Spellberg and Dr. Kendall Wise. A complimentary continental breakfast will be provided for all attendees and an informative “Ask the Doctors” question and answer session will follow the lecture.  Reservations are required.

The ability to focus radiation treatment on a tumor enables doctors to effectively kill cancerous cells, while minimizing damage to the surrounding, healthy tissue. New radiation treatments like RapidArc and Calypso can also work more quickly, reducing the number of treatments patients may need to undergo to treat their tumors.

It’s not just radiation treatment that’s getting specific. 21st Century Oncology also offers High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and cryosurgical treatments that kill cancer cells by rapidly turning up or down the temperature, respectively.

There are so many advances being made in cancer treatment, and 21st Century Oncology has a number of options to ‘remove’ cancerous tumors without making a single cut, and for patients who do need surgery; we also have more robotic, minimally invasive procedures that speed recovery and healing time. Advanced treatment systems include:

  • RapidArc: Powerful, highly precise radiation treatment to kill cancer cells and destroy tumors faster than traditional radiation.
  • TomoTherapy®: A system combining advanced imaging and radiation to deliver precise treatment, while reducing radiation’s exposure and impact on tissue surrounding tumors.
  • Calypso: A literal “GPS for the Body®,” this system implants transponders in cancer patients’ prostate to aid clinicians in targeting treatment and provide continuous monitoring to ensure treatment remains targeted.
  • Brachytherapy: Internal radiation therapy granule placed in the body next to small tumors suitable for many cancer types.
  • Robotic surgery: Minimally invasive surgical option that minimizes healing and recovery time.
  • CyberKnife Robotic Surgery: A non-invasive surgery system that uses beams of high-dose radiation to “cut out” tumors anywhere in the body – without a single cut.
  • High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU): Destroys cancerous tissue in the prostate by rapidly turning up the heat, or “cooking,” it, without damaging surrounding tissue.
  • Cryosurgery: A technique to kill cancer or precancerous cells through freezing with liquid nitrogen or argon gas.

Patients and others interested in learning more about these and other treatments should plan to attend 21st Century Oncology’s lecture on advances in cancer treatment. Reservations are required.

Date: Saturday, March 27
Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Place: Naples Beach Hotel851 Gulf Shore Boulevard North, Naples, Fla.
Reservations: Susan at 239-434-0166
