“I was honored to be asked to speak at the event,” Loren says.  “My session will focus on community involvement and how it can benefit businesses like ours. Anyone who knows me or Mark Loren Designs also knows that giving back and supporting the Southwest Florida community is important to us. Over the years, it’s also helped us build our business.”

Loren’s charitable involvement makes him a regular name on the charity auction circuit and his “giveaway promotions” for Mother’s Day 2009, the holidays and his shop’s 25th anniversary have caused quite a buzz in Southwest Florida and elsewhere. His efforts also earned him the title of Philanthropist of the Year from Gulfshore Business magazine in 2009. And, he’s continuously finding new ways to support the community through his work, such as donating a portion of the profit from each of his exclusive Firelight® diamond sales to The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

Loren’s no stranger to industry accolades, either. In 2003, INSTORE Magazine named his studio a Cool Store winner. He’s happy to help his peers follow in his footsteps.

“The more we can get businesses involved in and supporting their local communities, the more we all win,” he says. Loren’s presentation will be take place on the second day of the show, April 25.

Non-profit organization selected as “Charity of the Month”

Home-Tech(Fort Myers, Fla. – March 30, 2010) – Southwest Florida air-conditioning and appliance service and sales leader Home-Tech and its customers donated $611 to the American Red Cross recovery efforts in Haiti in February as part of the company’s Charity of the Month program.

Lee Memorial Health System brings popular Memory Classes to Bonita Springs

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

(Fort Myers, Fla.-March 25, 2010) -  Do you rely on lists during shopping trips or sticky notes in your car to remind you to pick up Fido from the groomer? Have you felt a sense of dread after washing your hands, realizing that an important name or number you’d written on them had also washed down the drain? If so, Lee Memorial Health System’s memory classes may be for you, and in April, South Lee County residents can take advantage of condensed classes in their own back yards at the Bonita Springs YMCA. A four-session series will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on April 6, 9, 13 and 16.

“Our memory classes are designed to teach participants tools and techniques to retain and remember more information,” says program coordinator Sue Maxwell. “They are part of the system’s Healthy Brain Initiative, which we started to help residents boost brain power and fight the onset of memory disorders. Since we started the classes late last year, hundreds of residents have participated and given us rave reviews. “

One such participant was Shirley Jimmerson, an 81-year-old Fort Myers resident. She learned that simply being aware and paying more attention to people and things could help power her memory. She also learned tricks to associate letters and numbers to help her remember things like phone and license plate numbers.

“We’re the only ones doing this kind of program in Southwest Florida,” Maxwell continues. “However, they are really catching on around the country. We held our initial sessions in central Fort Myers, but we’ve been able to expand around the region to match interest. We’re excited to being hosting classes down in Bonita Springs and to offer the condensed version of the class there that spreads sessions over two weeks instead of four.”

Four two-hour sessions are included in the memory class series. The cost is $20 per person, plus $10 for a class workbook. Bonita Springs YMCA members participating in the class will receive one complimentary workbook per couple. Registration is required.

State ENERGY STAR rebate program offers incentives for buying efficient appliances, recycling old ones

(Fort Myers, Fla. – March 18, 2010) –Southwest Florida residents looking to replace an old cranky refrigerator, reduce their energy bills or make an income tax refund go further may want to consider heading to Home-Tech’s showroom between April 16 – 25. For 10 days only, Florida residents can get 20 percent of the price of a new ENERGY STAR refrigerator, clothes washing machine, dishwasher, freezer, room air conditioner, or gas-tankless water heater back as a cash rebate from the state. Plus, they’ll get an extra $75 for recycling the units they replace.

“This is a great time for homeowners who have been thinking of getting a new appliance to do so,” says Mike Hendershott, sales manager for Home-Tech. “It could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save.”

Home-Tech’s Fort Myers showroom is stocking up on energy-efficient appliances in anticipation of next month’s ENERGY STAR appliance rebate program.

Home-Tech’s Fort Myers showroom is stocking up on energy-efficient appliances in anticipation of next month’s ENERGY STAR appliance rebate program.

Residents who purchase multiple new appliances and recycle old ones can apply for a rebate or incentive on one type of each eligible appliance, up to a maximum of $1,500 per address.  The state will award rebates on a first come, first served basis until the program budget is depleted. According to program information on the Florida Energy & Climate Commission Web site, the state is allocating $17,585,466 of the funding it received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to implement the program. It states that a small portion of the money will be used to administer the program, with the rest being used to provide rebates on purchases of ENERGY STAR appliances and incentives to recycle old appliances.

For Home-Tech’s service agreement customers, the deal is even sweeter: those with Gold service level agreements already get a discount off Home-Tech’s retail appliance prices. The ENERGY STAR rebate is offered on top of these savings. Customers who do not currently have a service agreement can sign up for Gold coverage and also receive both Home-Tech’s Gold discount pricing and the state rebate.

“Gold-discount price savings often cover the cost of a one-year service agreement in and of themselves,” Hendershott says. “When you also figure in the state rebate, the savings really add up. Customers could even buy multiple-year service agreements to lock in today’s premium price and spend roughly the same amount on their appliance when they get their rebate from the state.

“By adding a service agreement, you’re not just buying an appliance, you’re also buying piece of mind,” Hendershott adds. “And the service agreement covers all of the appliances in your home, not just the one you purchase.”

Unlike the original “Cash for Clunkers” incentive that applied to automobiles, customers must apply for rebates on their own following purchase – dealers will not apply the rebates to their purchase price. Hendershott encourages customers to buy and apply for their rebates early to maximize their savings.

“We anticipate a lot of demand for appliances,” Hendershott says. “Manufacturers have been working to build up inventory, but customers should still shop early for the best selection.” Home-Tech stocks a wide array of ENERGY STAR refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers that qualify for the program. Unlike “big box” stores, Home-Tech also services appliances, so its sales representatives have inside knowledge of each model and can help customers choose the best option to meet their needs.

More information on the Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate program can be found online at www.myfloridaclimate.com. Home-Tech’s entire appliance lineup can be viewed online at www.home-tech.com, or in store between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

(March 17, 2010 – Fort Myers, Fla.)

This year’s Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest, held on February 26 and 27 at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club, raised a record-breaking $930,000 (net, after expenses), most of which will be donated directly to three charities benefiting children’s health care in our area.

The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida will receive $700,000 from this year’s event, $173,000 of which was donated during the auction to specifically “fund the cause” of purchasing a giraffe bed/incubator, a RetCam to help prevent loss of sight in prematurely born infants, and a ventilator for the neonatal intensive care unit. Florida Gulf Coast University and Edison State College will each receive $50,000 to benefit programs related to educating future pediatric doctors and nurses.
“We played off the success of last year’s event, which raised $752,000 net,” said Steve Machiz, M.D., Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest founding chairman. “The trustees and donors had the opportunity to visit The Children’s Hospital late last year to see how the equipment the event sponsors is used to save the lives of premature babies which helped bring the cause home to so many supporters.”

Both the private dinners held the evening of Feb. 26 and the Grand Tasting and Auction on Feb. 27 provided outstanding food prepared by local chefs, fine wine and the opportunity to support the children of Southwest Florida.

“It’s no wonder the event has grown to be the largest in Lee County,” said Dr. Machiz.

Professional Auctioneer Scott Robertson, of Commercial Properties Southwest Florida, Voiceover Artist Randy Thomas, and NBC-2’s Kellie Burns guided several hundred attendees through Saturday’s bidding and festivities at the Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club. Along with the auction, local chefs joined more than a dozen wineries and distributors in the event’s Grand Tasting of wine and food.

“It poured outside as people were arriving, but that didn’t dampen any of the attendees’ spirits,” said Auctioneer Scott Robertson. “They were all very generous with their bids and donations.”

Northern Trust was the main sponsor of the 2010 Wine & Food Fest. Along with Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club, other supporters of the event included Norman Love Confections, Angelina’s Ristorante, and Palm Printing – Strategic Solutions.  Media sponsors were the News-Press, Grandeur Magazine, Gulfshore Life, and Gulfshore Business.

Girlyman Glides into Naples for Eden Benefit Concert

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

(March 16, 2010 – Naples, Fla.) – Folk-pop group Girlyman is coming to Naples for a one-night only show to benefit Eden Autism Services Florida as part of the organization’s annual “Gig for Good” series, presented by the Trust for the Advancement of Responsible Artists, or TARA. This year’s concert will be held at the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts on April 10 at 6 p.m.

“Eden Presents” sponsor Wilson Smith with Bob and J.P. Goldman at the 2009 event.

“Eden Presents” sponsor Wilson Smith with Bob and J.P. Goldman at the 2009 event.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to come out and hear great music from an up and coming group and benefit a great cause at the same time,” says TARA director and founder Bob Goldman. A longtime organizer of the Eden benefit series, Goldman and his son “discovered” Girlyman on a singer/songwriter cruise they took last year.

“They performed one night and were amazing,” Goldman says. “We immediately found their manager and asked them to do the show. And luckily, they said yes.”

Girlyman’s three members teamed up in 2001 and reviewers describe their sound as a seamless blend of “folk, country, pop and rock…defined by stunning three-part harmonies and beautiful melodies.” As one may suspect from their name, they like to make fun, playful music and don’t take themselves too seriously. Over the years, they have opened for established folk acts for the Indigo Girls and Dar Williams before becoming headliners themselves. They regularly play in venues across the country that allow for an intimate interaction with their fans.

This intimate feeling is something the Eden series strives for as well. “We typically prefer limited seating in intimate settings so attendees feel like they are watching concerts in their living rooms,” Goldman says.

Girlyman_white_RGB_smallProceeds from the concert will benefit Eden Autism Services Florida, the Naples-based charity that provides a range of community-based services to children and adults with autism. Founded in 1996 to address the state’s growing need for specialized services for children and adults with autism and their families, Eden’s services range from comprehensive outreach, including program consultations and early intervention, to 12-month education for school age students and residential and employment services for adults.

“Eden addresses the needs of people with autism like no one else in our community,” Goldman says. “When you have a resource like it in your community, that provides the school for children and group home for adults, just supporting the cause is reason enough to come to an event like ours. But people will also get a great performance by artists they might otherwise never get to see, too.”

Previous acts have included Ben Taylor – son of James Taylor and Carly Simon, Brandi Carlile, Phoebe Snow and Arnold McCuller.

General admission tickets for the 2010 Eden Florida Benefit Concern featuring Girlyman are $200 apiece and can be purchased on TARA’s Web site, www.gigforgood.org or by calling 239-919-0408. The concern will be held April 10 at 6 p.m. at the Naples Philarharmonic Center for the Arts, Daniels Pavillion.

Advances in joint replacement technology to be discussed at March 24 Well-Informed Seminar

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

(Fort Myers, Fla.-March 10, 2010) -  Joint and bone pain is a popular subject in Southwest Florida, which is not surprising considering the amount of physical activities residents and visitors can enjoy. Whether you swing a club or racquet, prefer swimming pools or swamp walks, chances are you or someone you know has felt the pain of joint discomfort. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, one in three Americans suffer from bone and joint pain, but new technologies have been developed to help the distress. Researchers, such as Dr. Markovich, have developed new surgical methods for joint replacement which can reduce the incision size as well as bone irritation as well as muscle disruption, allowing for a less painful and quicker recovery.

Dr. George Markovich has “good news for bad joints” at Lee Memorial Health System’s March 24 Well Informed seminar.

Dr. George Markovich has “good news for bad joints” at Lee Memorial Health System’s March 24 Well Informed seminar.

Dr. George Markovich, an orthopedic surgeon on the medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System, will discuss new technologies, debunk common myths regarding joint implants and answer questions as a part of the Well Informed Lecture Series on March 24 between 5-6:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Place Coconut Point in Estero.

“If you are suffering from joint pain that impacts your quality of life, whether it is keeping you up at night or limiting your physical abilities, get help,” Dr. Markovich says. “The benefit of relieving symptoms through surgery can make a significant difference in the lives of those with joint and bone pain.”

Markovich advises people to seek help as soon as possible, because early detection and treatment lead to better results.  Joint pain should not just be a job for the Tylenol bottle; to improve their quality of life, sufferers must seek medical advice.   About 773,000 Americans have a hip or knee replaced each year, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease, and with less risk than ever this number is sure to increase.

Markovich will discuss new technologies, common myths about implants and other joint replacement details at Lee Memorial Health System’s upcoming Well Informed Lecture.

Seminar on Advanced Technology to Fight Prostate Cancer to be Held

Monday, March 8th, 2010

21c LOGO 2colr copy(Fort Myers, Fla. – March 8, 2010) – GPS isn’t just for driving directions anymore. Today’s radiation treatments for cancer patients can now pinpoint tumor locations and direct treatment to tumors with laser-like precision, just like your car or phone’s GPS can detect your exact location. Those wanting to learn more can attend 21st Century Oncology’s March 27 seminar from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Naples Beach Hotel. Presenters include Dr. Chaundre Cross, Dr. Michael Hanus, Dr. Bruce Nakfoor, Dr. David Ornstein, Dr. David Spellberg and Dr. Kendall Wise. A complimentary continental breakfast will be provided for all attendees and an informative “Ask the Doctors” question and answer session will follow the lecture.  Reservations are required.

The ability to focus radiation treatment on a tumor enables doctors to effectively kill cancerous cells, while minimizing damage to the surrounding, healthy tissue. New radiation treatments like RapidArc and Calypso can also work more quickly, reducing the number of treatments patients may need to undergo to treat their tumors.

It’s not just radiation treatment that’s getting specific. 21st Century Oncology also offers High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and cryosurgical treatments that kill cancer cells by rapidly turning up or down the temperature, respectively.

There are so many advances being made in cancer treatment, and 21st Century Oncology has a number of options to ‘remove’ cancerous tumors without making a single cut, and for patients who do need surgery; we also have more robotic, minimally invasive procedures that speed recovery and healing time. Advanced treatment systems include:

  • RapidArc: Powerful, highly precise radiation treatment to kill cancer cells and destroy tumors faster than traditional radiation.
  • TomoTherapy®: A system combining advanced imaging and radiation to deliver precise treatment, while reducing radiation’s exposure and impact on tissue surrounding tumors.
  • Calypso: A literal “GPS for the Body®,” this system implants transponders in cancer patients’ prostate to aid clinicians in targeting treatment and provide continuous monitoring to ensure treatment remains targeted.
  • Brachytherapy: Internal radiation therapy granule placed in the body next to small tumors suitable for many cancer types.
  • Robotic surgery: Minimally invasive surgical option that minimizes healing and recovery time.
  • CyberKnife Robotic Surgery: A non-invasive surgery system that uses beams of high-dose radiation to “cut out” tumors anywhere in the body – without a single cut.
